Authorities in the United States say the man who drove a truck into a synagogue in Michigan had recently experienced personal tragedy after several family members were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon.
The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, carried out the attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, a suburb of Detroit. Investigators say the incident is being examined as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.
According to the FBI, Ghazali died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a confrontation with police following the attack.
Officials revealed that Ghazali had been waiting in his truck outside the synagogue for nearly two hours before driving into the building’s entrance area. During the incident, he reportedly fired shots through the windshield of his vehicle at security guards.
Investigators also discovered materials in the truck that raised additional concerns. The vehicle contained large quantities of commercial fireworks and several containers of flammable liquid, which ignited during the attack.
Despite the severity of the incident, no worshippers or children inside the synagogue and its attached preschool were killed.
Authorities confirmed that a security guard was injured but is expected to recover. Several responding police officers were treated for smoke inhalation caused by the fire that broke out after the truck crashed into the building.
More than 100 children attending the preschool were evacuated safely during the emergency.
Local officials revealed that Ghazali had recently lost relatives in Lebanon following an Israeli airstrike earlier this month.
According to reports, two of his brothers and two young relatives were among those killed in the attack.
Dearborn Heights Mayor Mo Baydoun acknowledged that the suspect had experienced devastating losses but emphasized that such events cannot justify violence.
Leaders of the synagogue described the attack as a terrifying experience for the community.
Rabbi Jennifer Lader said Jewish institutions across the United States have become increasingly aware of security risks and have been forced to adopt strict safety measures.
She noted that many synagogues now maintain permanent security teams to ensure the safety of worshippers and community members.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the attack and described it as an act driven by hatred toward the Jewish community.
The governor warned that antisemitism has been increasing across the United States and called for stronger efforts to combat hate crimes.
Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin also addressed the issue, pointing out that Jewish communities experience a disproportionately high number of hate crimes compared with other groups in the country.
Federal investigators say the motive behind the attack is still being examined, and authorities are continuing to review evidence gathered at the scene.
The FBI also confirmed that the incident is not connected to the shooting that occurred at Old Dominion University in Virginia earlier the same day.
For now, officials say there are no additional threats against the community, though security measures around religious institutions in the region have been increased.
